Walsall defender Rhys Weston has been taken on trial by SPL side Motherwell with a view to a future move to the club.

The 29-year-old, whose wife is from Scotland, has been given permission by Saddlers boss Chris Hutchings to travel up to Scotland for the short trial as he looks to impress ahead of a potential summer move.

Weston, who can also operate in central defence, will be back in the west Midlands for Walsall's league match with Carlisle this weekend before assessing his options.

"Rhys' wife is from Scotland and he sought my permission to link up with Motherwell for a short trial," manager Chris Hutchings told the Saddlers' official website.

"I gave him permission on that basis but he will be back training with us before the end of the week."
