SPL to investigate Fir Park pitch

The SPL has confirmed it is to look into whether Motherwell did enough to prevent their poor pitch from deteriorating.

The much-maligned Fir Park surface has again been in a poor state this season, despite the fact the club reportedly spent around £350,000 on it over the summer to install a new drainage and under-soil heating system.

Motherwell issued a statement saying the cold weather has prevented the new pitch from bedding in as they would have liked and now the SPL has admitted it is to hold an independent investigation.

A spokesman said: "The condition of the pitch is a concern to us; it's high up on the SPL board's agenda.

"We've had an independent expert in to look at it and we've still got a little bit of further work to do on that side of things before any decision is taken."

Motherwell were hit with a suspended £20,000 fine by the SPL a year ago for problems with their under-soil heating and the general state of the pitch and could find themselves hit with a similar charge now.
