Motherwell are hoping to appoint a new manager 'by the end of the week' with club captain Stephen Craigan working as acting manager.

Motherwell's players will return for their first day of pre-season training today, as they prepare for participation in the Europa League qualifiers, with the board still looking for a new boss.

Steve Staunton, Lawrie Sanchez and Gary McAllister are all understood to be in the running to succeed Mark McGhee at Fir Park, with an announcement expected in the next five days.

Craigan, who will organise training, revealed: "We hope to have a new manager by the end of the week.

"They (the players) needed someone to organise training, so I have spoken with the physio. It might all change in a couple of days if someone is appointed."
