Winger accepts future lies elsewhere

Motherwell winger Darren Smith is hoping to end the season on a high, which he accepts could be his last at the club.

Smith was forced under the knife to cure a hip problem in the summer and was never fully fit for Jim Gannon, while he struggled to force his way into new boss Craig Brown's plans as the former Scotland boss's enjoyed a long unbeaten run at the start of his tenure.

Smith was sent to Stenhousemuir on loan in February to build up his fitness only to suffer a hamstring problem, but now that has cleared up he is hoping to get a chance somewhere else next term.

"My contract is up and I have not really been playing so I can't see I'll be offered a new one," said the 22-year-old.

"I just hope someone will give me the opportunity and I'll produce it for someone else.

"I'm really open to anything, I just want to play. The season has been so frustrating, it has just got me down a bit.

"I want to go somewhere where I can get 30-40 games a season, just for the love of playing football again. I'm fit now and I just want to get at it again."
