Shola Ameobi was delighted to have emerged as Newcastle's hero against Sunderland once again.
Newcastle trailed to Nicklas Bendtner's first-half penalty but Ameobi grabbed his seventh goal in 12 games against the Black Cats in the final minute to hand the hosts a draw.
Earlier, Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet saved a Demba Ba penalty while the Wearsiders' Stephane Sessegnon was dismissed for a needless elbow on Cheick Tiote. The 10 men battled bravely only to be undone at the death by Ameobi.
"It has been a mad week," Ameobi told ESPN after the game. "I have had the flu and didn't expect to be involved.
"It is just one of those games I tend to score in. It is such a fantastic feeling for me, the fans and the club. They made it tough for us but I managed to come off the bench and grab a goal.
"When you come on, you want to be on the scoresheet. I have started a lot of games against Sunderland so it's a new experience for me but the manager said to me 'Go and get a goal' and I duly obliged."
