American private equity firm InterMedia Partners has rubbished reports claiming they are interested in buying out Newcastle United.

Reports on Friday suggested Magpies owner Mike Ashley had held talks with the potential New York-based investors with a view to a possible £420million buyout.

Newcastle officials quickly denied the claims and ruled out selling the club later that day, while InterMedia Partners have now claimed that it was them who were approached by an unnamed party about taking over at St James' Park but they have no interest in the deal.

"InterMedia was approached about a deal, made no offer and has no interest," a spokesman said.
