Newcastle are sweating on the fitness of Yohan Cabaye who may be forced to undergo surgery on a troublesome groin injury.
The influential Frenchman missed Saturday's 2-1 home defeat to Swansea with the problem but there are now fears he could be set for a spell on the sidelines.
Toon boss Alan Pardew has confirmed they have sent the midfielder for a second opinion and will wait for the results from that before deciding what course of action to take.
There is a chance Cabaye could need surgery which means he is likely to be out until at least the new year, something Pardew and his wafer-thin squad could do without as the games come thick and fast.
There is some better news concerning Jonas Gutierrez, who also missed the game against the impressive Swans, but looks in line to return this weekend against Southampton.
