Wigan look set to resurrect a move for Danny Simpson in the summer after Newcastle blocked a deal on deadline day.

Latics were keen to do a deal for the player who is out of contract in the summer and will be available on a free, but Toon boss Alan Pardew blocked the move as he did not want to sell to a relegation rival.

It has now been revealed that Simpson was on his way to Wigan, Peter Odemwingie style, but got a call to say he could not move to the DW Stadium and had to do a U-turn.

Simpson will now stick it out at St James Park until the summer when Wigan will make another attempt to sign him. However competition will be rife for his signature with Fulham and West Ham among the clubs known to be keen.

The 26-year-old has lost his place in recent weeks to France international Mathieu Debuchy and a move looks certain to happen.
