Duo out of striker race

Ajax and PSV Eindhoven have reportedly ended their interest in Luuk de Jong, leaving the way clear for Newcastle.

The 23-year-old moved to Borussia Monchengladbach from FC Twente back in 2012 but has now fallen down the pecking order at the Stadion im Borussia-Park and it appears his days at the club are numbered.

Both Dutch clubs were said to be interested in the former De Graafschap hit-man but baulked at his price tag and will look elsewhere for reinforcements during the January transfer window.

The Magpies are also thought to be keen to take the Switzerland-born ace to St James' Park but Alan Pardew wants him on loan, while Gladbach have offered him for around £7million on a permanent deal.
