Italians enter midfielder race

Last Updated: Tue, 18 Mar 2014 12:29

Newcastle face strong competition from Roma and Lazio in the race to sign Montpellier midfielder Remy Cabella.

Cabella is Alan Pardew's number one target as he attempts to replace Yohan Cabaye and he is expected to make another move in the summer after failing to do a deal in January.

Montpellier officials say Cabella would be crazy to move to St James' Park and will not sanction a deal, but that is unlikely to deter Pardew from making another bid.

However, Cabella will have options in the summer with Premier League rivals Manchester United also known to be in the hunt along with Italian duo Roma and Lazio.

Roma in particular are keen to do a deal as they line up a possible replacement for midfielder Miralem Pjanic, who is attracting interest from Europe's big guns.
