Keegan targets quartet

NewcastleNewcastle boss Kevin Keegan says he wants to add at least four new signings to his squad before the transfer window closes.

Keegan will be looking to add mainly to his defence but he knows that his squad as a whole is too small and if the club are to do better than last year's 12th they need to add fresh faces.

He told the Echo: "How many players do I want? Ideally about 20, but seriously? About four. About four quality players in the right positions.

"There have definitely got to be some more (signings) in the pipeline.

"We only had two players (on the bench) against Hartlepool who I would call senior players. That gave us a total of 12 outfield players.

"We are like a lot of clubs at the moment, everyone is waiting for something to happen. But we are still looking and they will definitely have to be in by the end of the transfer window because you can't go into the Premier League with this small a squad. Everyone is working hard and we will see what happens."
