Keegan is determined to keep hold of the former Liverpool and Real Madrid star and hopes matters could be concluded in the next "two to three weeks".
The Toon chief also told the Telegraph: "They are two things in our favour. I hope it will be sorted out in the next couple of weeks. He's a leader for us in the way he trains, the way he leads by example.
"He's not one to shout and bawl and wave his fists about but he shows people how to play the game properly and that's the kind of captain I like."
