Magpies chief facing crunch decision

NewsThe pressure is building on Mike Ashley as Newcastle seek a suitable replacement for Kevin Keegan, with Gus Poyet heading the list.

The Tottenham first-team coach is the firm favourite to fill the vacancy after Keegan's resignation on Thursday, although Spurs say they are 'confident' they can hold onto the Uruguayan.

Poyet was mentioned straight away as a potential replacement because of his links with Dennis Wise, Newcastle's executive director, with whom he worked with at Leeds and many have been taking advantage of a £25 free bet on the former Chelsea midfielder.

The fans have shown their anger and indicated the only appointment that would appease them would be that of former striker Alan Shearer, but the club's record goalscorer has insisted that now is not the right time for him to take the post.

Wise has also been mentioned as the possible successor but surely that appointment would be like a red rag to a bull for the Magpies faithful, who are already threatening to boycott next weekend's home clash with Hull.

Reports in the North East have also indicated that Newcastle officials have already spoken to representatives of Brazilian legend Zico, who resigned as boss of Turkish side Fenerbahce this summer.
