Manchester City look set to scupper Newcastle's hopes of signing Angers winger Nicolas Pepe in this summer's transfer window.
Magpies boss Rafa Benitez appeared to be leading the chase, ahead of Premier League rivals Watford and top European sides such as Wolfsburg, Hamburg, Paris Saint-Germain, Monaco, Lille and Lyon for the signature of the highly-rated 22-year-old Ivory Coast international.
Benitez expressed an interest in January, but failed to get a deal over the line, but now Newcastle are back in the Premier League it was expected that Pepe would be moving to St James' Park in a 12 million euros switch.
However reports have emerged that City boss Pep Guardiola sees Pepe, who made 33 appearances for Angers in French Ligue 1 last term, as a long-term investment at the Etihad Stadium.
As a result it appears the player has had his head turned and will opt for a switch to the Etihad Stadium.
