Newcastle are keen on Cagliari's Colombian forward Victor Ibarbo, while former Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner has also been linked.
Ibaro is expected to leave Italian outfit Cagliari this summer as he has just a year left on his current contract and the Magpies are said to be leading the chase to sign the 24-year-old, who is on offer for around £8million.
Ibarbo managed just five goals last season but often operated out wide, catching the attention of fellow Serie A sides Juventus, AC Milan and Napoli as well as Newcastle.
He is part of Colombia's 23-man World Cup squad, and played in their warm-up game against Senegal on Saturday.
Cagliari sporting director Nicola Salerno said admitted the player's future remains uncertain. He said: "At the moment, it's impossible to speak about the market as he's going to the World Cup.
"He is very likely to end up at a big European club. Now it is important that he has an important World Cup."
Boss Alan Pardew has made it clear he wants to sign at least two striker this summer after losing the services of Loic Remy, Luuk de Jong and Shola Ameobi.
With the injured Papiss Cisse the only senior striker at the club at the moment, reinforcements are desperately needed, although a deal to sign young Tenerife striker Ayoze Perez, 20, for £1.8million is said to be close.
Denmark international Bendtner is also a target, according to some reports. He is leaving Arsenal this summer but is thought to be determined to land a move to another Premier League club and Newcastle could offer him the chance to revive his career.
Bendtner scored eight goals in 25 Premier League starts on loan at Sunderland in 2011-12, but started just once for the Gunners last season as he found himself down the pecking order at the Emirates.
