Newcastle are being linked with a move for Liverpool midfielder Jay Spearing after he impressed on loan at Bolton.
The Magpies are focused on earning enough points to stay in the Premier League but that is not stopping speculation over who boss Alan Pardew wants on board next season if they do beat the drop.
Wigan midfielder James McCarthy has already been heavily linked with a move to St James' Park and now Liverpool's tough-tackling Spearing is also said to be a target.
The 24-year-old has just one-year remaining on his contract at Anfield but he is not in the plans of Reds boss Brendan Rodgers, who shipped him out on loan to Bolton after taking over from Kenny Dalglish.
Spearing has impressed on loan at the Reebok Stadium and the Trotters will no doubt be keen on a permanent move if they can win promotion back to the Premier League via the play-offs.
