McDermott makes transfer hint

NewcastleTerry McDermott has again moved to assure Newcastle fans that manager Kevin Keegan is working hard at signing new players.

Keegan is keen to bring in reinforcements to bolster his thin-looking squad ahead of the big kick-off on August 17 against Manchester United and is close to signing defender Fabricio Coloccini.

However, the tough Argentinian may not be the only new arrival on board by the time Newcastle travel to Old Trafford, according to right-hand man McDermott.

Speaking after the 1-0 loss against Doncaster at the weekend, he told the Chronicle: "I am sure there will be new arrivals - I've got no doubts about that.

"But we've got to concentrate on what we've got here at the minute.

"The lads are training really well.

"We were beaten at Doncaster, but at Hartlepool we finished strong and, until we handed Doncaster a goal, we did OK.

"It was a bad mistake by Jose Enrique for the goal - but that's football for you.

"It's best to get these things out of the way.

"It's different when it means something in terms of points or progress in the cup.

"You're devastated when it happens to you in that situation.

"Hopefully, it doesn't happen again in the season."
