Newcastle boss Alan Pardew has confirmed he is interested in Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis and negotiations are believed to be underway.
Pardew has been linked several forwards this summer and has been tracking Gomis and Aston Villa striker Darren Bent in recent weeks.
The Magpies boss says he is keen on the Lyon star amid talk an offer in the region of £10million would be enough to land him ahead of the likes of Villa, Swansea and Cardiff.
"We have expressed an interest in Gomis," Pardew told The Times. "We think that he's a player who has great potential.
"He's a French international who's played at the highest level for his club."
Bent also remains a target for Newcastle with his time looking up at Villa following a fall-out with Paul Lambert but the Midlanders are believed to be holding out for around £15m for the former Sunderland man and that is a price that, so far, Pardew is unwilling to meet.
