Pardew may make Defoe offer

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew has admitted he is a big fan of Spurs striker Jermain Defoe and hinted at a possible January swoop.

Defoe has had to be content with starts in Europe and cup competitions for Tottenham this season, with summer signing Roberto Soldado used as Andre Villas-Boas' main striker.

That has led to reports the England man will seek a move away in the January transfer window and Pardew, who knows the forward from their time together at West Ham, is clearly an admirer.

"I worked with Jermain at West Ham and I think that he's a fantastic player," said Pardew. "When the ball comes to into him, whether it is left foot or right, he is hugely effective."

Defoe, who broke Spurs' European goalscoring record with his 23rd strike on Thursday against Sheriff, has been linked with moves over the past 12 months and Pardew has revealed Newcastle were keen on him in the summer.

They remain interested but the Toon boss says persuading the 31-year-old to swap White Hart Lane for St James' Park may prove difficult.

"There was a little bit of interest from us in the summer as well," Pardew added. "He's a terrific player, but I'm not sure he would want to come to this football club."
