Newcastle United are believed to have contacted Manchester City about the possibility of signing defender Micah Richards.
The 25-year-old has just entered the last two years of his current contract at the Etihad Stadium and has refused to discuss a new deal with the club after failing to receive reassurances about his future.
Richards became disillusioned with life at City under former boss Roberto Mancini and new manager Manuel Pellegrini has done little to ease his fears about his status at the club having used him sparingly this season.
Newcastle are now thought to have made an enquiry about Richards' services but face a fight to secure the England international's signature after City slapped a price tag of £15million on the defender.
The Toon are hoping the offer of regular first team football might tempt Richards into pushing for a move to St James' Park in January if the situation at the Etihad doesn't improve.
