Roma are targeting a move for Danny Simpson, who has yet to pen a new deal with Newcastle and could be on the move.
The right-back has been a regular in the Magpies side over the past couple of seasons but he is out of contract in the summer and unless he signs a new one could leave on a free.
The 25-year-old will not be short of offers should he decide to reject terms at St James' Park and a fresh challenge in Italy's Serie A could appeal to him.
Scouts from Roma are reported to have been checking him out and they could make an approach when the January window opens with a view to doing a deal early.
Newcastle have enough problems in defence and will not entertain the idea of him leaving then but Roma could still tie him down to a pre-contract arrangement ahead of the summer.
