Newcastle are waiting to hear the full extent of Yoan Gouffran's injury but say he has not suffered a broken leg.

The striker, who only arrived at the club during the transfer window, had to leave the field on a stretcher during the 2-1 defeat at Tottenham on Saturday following a clash with Kyle Walker.

Alan Pardew revealed after the game that the player had suffered a nasty gash on his shin and feared there could also have been some damage to the bone that would sideline him for a lengthy spell.

However any such fears have now been dispersed although it is still unclear exactly how long he will be out for.

A club statement read: "Newcastle United are pleased to report that a precautionary X-ray has shown that Yoan Gouffran has not broken his right leg.

"The French forward was stretchered off during the second half of Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur, and Gouffran will be further assessed on Sunday by the club's medical staff."

The results of such tests have yet to be revealed and Pardew will be keeping his fingers crossed.
