Newcastle are ready to battle it out with West Ham for the services of Southampton winger Jason Puncheon this summer.
The winger is out of contract at the end of the season and, although he would like to stay at St Mary's, Southampton appear to be stalling over a new deal and that could open the door for rival clubs to swoop.
That, along with a six goals from the wing this season, has alerted other clubs including Newcastle and West Ham, to his possible availability and the 26-year-old would not be short of suitors.
Puncheon was placed on the transfer list last season after a spat with Saints chairman Nicola Cortese and, although they are said to have patched up their differences, Cortese appears reluctant to offer him a new deal, until Premier League status is confirmed.
Toon boss Alan Pardew is said to be a big fan of the player and is watching developments closely with a view to making a move.
