Alan Pardew says Newcastle are closing in on their first signing of the summer with Darren Bent reported to be the target.
The Magpies boss is keen to bolster his squad following last season's flirt with relegation but he has yet to make a new signing this summer, despite the arrival of new director of football Joe Kinnear.
However that could be about to change and Pardew says he is hoping to get some good news while he is away with the rest of his players in Portugal.
Pardew is on the look out for two new strikers and is known to be keen on Bent, who has been told he is free to leave Aston Villa if a club can match their £5million valuation.
Pardew is refusing to name names but says a deal is close to going through.
"I would expect to be down the road with a transfer when we are in Portugal," Pardew revealed. "I am hoping that Joe and Lee Charnley (club secretary) get something over the line."
