Newcastle are continuing to show an interest in midfielder Clement Grenier, who is facing an uncertain future with Lyon.
The Magpies have been tracking Grenier for some time and rumours went into overdrive on Tuesday suggesting he was heading to Tyneside to undergo a medical.
Such reports have been dismissed in France and it is claimed that Newcastle have yet to make a bid for the player, who is also wanted by Italian giants AC Milan.
However Toon boss Alan Pardew remains in the hunt and there is still a chance a deal could happen if they match Lyon's valuation.
"We cannot talk about compensating for his potential departure," Lyon boss Hubert Fournier said. "Due to his talent, we will not find somebody on the market to replace him because of our financial means.
"We will adapt appropriately if he leaves. For the moment, we have not had any satisfying offers.
"There have been propositions because he is a quality player who is wanted a lot around the world. But they were not perceived to be adequate by the club."
Pardew has had a busy summer but his spending spree is not over yet and Grenier could be the next player to arrive in the north east.
