Newcastle are being linked with a move for Wigan midfielder Momo Diame should Chieck Tiote leave St James' Park.
Toon boss Alan Pardew is determined to keep hold of his star players but is making contingency plans should any of them leave and Diame is said to be on his list of targets.
The Senegal international is due to fall out of contract in the summer and although Latics hope to get him tied down to a new one, everything will hinge on them staying in the Premier League.
Even if Roberto Martinez does guide them to safety, Diame could still fancy a move to Newcastle as fellow countrymen Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse are already at the club.
Latics also face a similar situation with Victor Moses, who is another target for Pardew, and a double swoop could be on the cards if Wigan fail in their attempts to beat the drop.
Real Betis have been linked to the midfielder who was signed from Rayo Vallecano for just under £3million by Martinez.
