Newcastle have missed out on the signing of Hertha Berlin forward Pierre-Michel Lasogga, who is heading to Hamburg.

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew had been keen on Lasogga, but Hamburg's sporting director Oliver Kreuzer says the club is close to tying up a deal.

The 22-year-old had been widely expected to leave the German capital this summer having spent last season on loan at Hamburg, where he scored 13 goals in 20 Bundesliga appearances.

The former Germany Under-21 international has since been considering his options amid interest from the Magpies.

It looked as though Lasogga would be on his way to England at one point but appears to have changed his mind and is set to make a £9million move to the Imtech Arena instead.

Kreuzer said: "We are on the right track. Hertha have come down (in price) a bit. But it's possible that we can report the deal today (Tuesday) or Tuesday afternoon."
