Newcastle are being linked with a £7million move for Genk striker Jelle Vossen after dropping all interest in Bafetimbi Gomis.
Toon boss Alan Pardew has confirmed he wants to bring in at least one new striker before the window closes and is looking at alternatives after becoming frustrated with his attempts to land Gomis.
Newcastle appeared to be closing in on a move for Gomis after agreeing a £7million fee with Lyon but the deal turned complicated when the Frenchman's agents got involved and the Magpies have walked away.
Director of Football Joe Kinnear has now turned his attentions to Vossen, who has impressed in Belgium when scoring 65 goals over the last three seasons.
Pardew is hoping for developments over the course of the week and says he will be in constant touch with Kinnear so he knows exactly what is going on as the deadline approaches.
"It's important that I know where he is on the transfer front, and I know what chances we have of securing one or two others," Pardew told the Gazette.
"That contact is always going to be there now. I will speak to him throughout this very important week. He will do whatever he can to help me."
