Aston Villa are showing a keen interest in Danny Guthrie and hope to land the Newcastle midfielder on a free transfer.

Guthrie is out of contract in the summer and although Newcastle are keen to tie him down to a new deal, there is every chance he could move on in search of first-team football.

The former Liverpool and Bolton star has only made the first team when injuries have bitten into Alan Pardew's midfield and he could jump at the chance of a move if Villa pursue their interest.

With Pardew aiming to strengthen his squad further in the summer, Guthrie is likely to slip even further down the pecking order at St James Park and a move could be the best option for him.

Talks with Danny Simpson have also stalled and it looks as though all contract negotiations are on hold until the end of the season when Newcastle will know whether or not they are planning for European football.
