Wigan have beaten off competition from Newcastle to land Gambia Under 20 winger Alieu Darbo on a three-year deal.
Darbo had been on trial at both Wigan and Newcastle but, according to reports, he opted for the DW Stadium because he felt as though Latics made more of an effort to lure him.
The Swedish born 20-year-old is available on a free transfer after being released from French Ligue 2 side Le Mans, but he will only come into Roberto Martinez's thoughts for next season.
The deal would have been wrapped up sooner but the player has been recovering from a knee injury that has delayed matters.
"Everything is ready now, I went over to England and signed for three years [with Wigan]. It feels very good," he revealed. "I still have problems with my knee and will probably not be healthy until next season, but I'm thinking for the first team."
Sunderland had also been keen on the player but Wigan have won the day and will be hoping they have landed a player of the future.
