Newcastle look set to miss out on the signing of Michael Owen after Real Madrid said they are considering a bid from Liverpool.
Owen jetted into England on Monday to hold talks with both Newcastle and Liverpool, but it looks as though the Reds have stolen a march by making Real an offer.
Newcastle had a £17million bid accepted last week but with Owen known to prefer a move back to Anfield, the Reds are now favourites to land him.
It is believed Liverpool have offered to take the player on a season-long loan with a view to buying him back next summer, something the Real board are set to discuss when they meet today.
Newcastle said in a statement on their website: "England striker Michael Owen held talks with Newcastle about a move to St James' Park. Owen and his representatives met up with a delegation from United at a Northumberland hotel.
"Real Madrid accepted a club record offer from Newcastle last week, and it is now up to the player to decide where his future lies."
Alan Shearer has also spoken with the player at length in a bid to convince him his future lies at St James Park, but with time fast running out Liverpool remain hot favourites.
