Mark Hughes has leapt to the defence of Robbie Savage who is at the centre of controversy following the sending off of Gilberto Silva.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger said both players deserved the same colour card be it red or yellow after a Gilberto had kicked out at Savage following a hefty challenge and the Welshman had gone to the ground theatrically.

Hughes said: "People are trying to take issue with Robbie as they normally do but I don't think Robbie was at fault at all.

"He was making a genuine attempt to try and get the ball and he (Gilberto) has reacted totally in the wrong way.

"Initially he used his arm to push Robbie and finally lashed out with his foot. It's a clear sending off and I don't think there can be any complaints."
