Chelsea are on the verge of landing Steve Sidwell after Reading confirmed the midfielder has left the club.

Sidwell has left the Madejski Stadium on a free transfer and Chelsea are believed to have fought off competition from Newcastle United to land the player.

Reading boss Steve Coppell has revealed Sidwell has left the Royals and even though he refused to say where he was heading, Stamford Bridge is the likely destination for the player.

"He's gone," Coppell revealed after seeing his side miss out on the Uefa Cup following a 3-3 draw at Blackburn. "I know exactly where he's gone but I am not allowed to say."

Jose Mourinho is desperate to bolster his midfield but also refused to confirm whether a deal with Sidwell had been struck.

"I don't think it is the time to talk about it," Mourinho revealed. "It is obvious that we need a couple of players, two or three players. That is the nature of a team like us which is trying to improve."
