Ryan Bennett staked his claim for a place in the Norwich side after a goalscoring performance in the reserves' 5-1 defeat to Fulham.

The England U21 international, who was signed from Peterborough during the January transfer window, was played on the right side of a defensive trio against the Cottagers' second string in the Premier Reserve League clash at Colney on Tuesday.

And, in his first appearance for the club, he showed watching Canaries boss Paul Lambert and his assistant Ian Culverhouse what he can do at the other end of the pitch with a towering header from Bradley Johnson's cross to get back into the game.

However, Bennett's goal proved to be a false dawn as Fulham went on to hit five to leave a fairly strong reserve-team on the end of a hiding.

In addition to Bennett and Johnson, the fit again defender Dani Ayala, Leon Barnett, skipper Andrew Crofts and Aaron Wilbraham, who was substituted after 66 minutes, were the other first-team fringe men in the side.

And, Bennett aside, it is hard to see that any of them impressed enough to be considered for this weekend's Premier League clash with Fulham's first-team at Craven Cottage.
