Wigan manager Owen Coyle has tabled a £500,000 bid for Norwich City centre back Leon Barnett, but faces competition from Doncaster.
Barnett, 27, helped the Canaries win promotion to the Premier League two seasons ago and last term played a part in Cardiff City's long-awaited elevation to the top flight while on loan there.
The former Luton Town and West Brom defender did not play in the Canaries' pre-season draw at Brighton on Tuesday, despite Chris Hughton still being without Michael Turner or Seb Bassong who are recovering from injuries.
Coyle wants Barnett to join his promotion-chasing squad, where he would line up ion the same side as ex-City striker Grant Holt, but Doncaster Rovers have also shown interest.
However, the South Yorkshire club are waiting on investment from Ireland before they can complete a number of ambitious swoops that they have lined up.
