Manager Paul Dickov found it hard to hide his disappointment after another home defeat.
The Latics are sliding back into the danger zone in npower League One after two losses in a week, against Bury and Tranmere, at Boundary Park.
"We had got ourselves on a decent little run, so it's bitterly disappointing to lose both of those games," said Dickov after the 1-0 reverse to Tranmere. "I wanted a reaction after the performance against Bury on Tuesday night and the positive is that we played a lot better.
"I've seen a lot of Tranmere this season and they have been brushing teams aside, but we more than matched them. Maybe a draw would have been the right result, but to take nothing from two home games is a big disappointment for everyone.
"The game was won and lost on second balls inside the two boxes because Tranmere were sharper to react. They anticipated better than we did and the goal we conceded came because we switched off from a set-piece. We've generally improved in that area, so it's disappointing that one set-piece has cost us the game.
"We are a better team than we've been showing, so we'll stay positive and keep believing."
