Below-par Giants take season opener

Other SportsThe New York Giants failed to spark but still had enough to beat Washington 16-7 in the NFL season-opener at Meadowlands.

Quarterback Eli Manning scored on a one-yard touchdown run for the Super Bowl champions on the game's opening drive, but that was the only touchdown for the Big Apple outfit.

The Giants added three field goals, while Redskins' QB Jason Campbell connected with Santana Moss with a 12-yard TD pass and there was no scoring in the second half.

Despite his team's lacklustre second-half performance offensively, Giants head coach Tom Coughlin was happy with the win.

"We definitely have a lot of work to do," he said. "The key thing is we opened at home, we won at home and that's a nice way to start.

"I'm disappointed with the penalties, but we knew that this was a work in progress."
