The 36-year-old, who won a split decision over Bernard Hopkins in April, said he would have rather brought the curtain down on his glittering career in front of his home fans.
Calzaghe told The Sun: "It's a big shame I couldn't fight in Cardiff.
"To be honest, my first choice would have been to fight at the Millennium Stadium.
"I've got so many good memories of fighting in Cardiff and some of the best nights of my career were at the CIA.
"But the powers-that-be want me to fight in America. HBO weren't happy about running a pay-per-view show from outside the States and you have to go with what they say.
"My second choice was Madison Square Garden but I probably would have made more money in Las Vegas.
"At least for the fans it's a lot easier, cheaper and quicker to get to New York.
"I wish I could have fought at the Millennium Stadium for them but that's just the way it is."
