Idowu settles for silver

Other SportsPhillips Idowu's Olympic dream was dashed as the world number one had to settle for silver in the Olympic triple jump final.

The 29-year-old was seen as Britain's biggest hope of a track and field gold medal, but despite holding the lead following the third round of the final, he was pushed into second by Portugal's Nelson Evora.

Idowu lept to 17.62m with his third round jump but Evora responded with a fourth round effort of 17.67m, to claim Portugal's first gold of the Beijing Games.

Leevan Sands of the Bahamas took bronze, while Britain's Larry Achike was seventh with 17.17m.

Meanwhile, Britain just lost out on a medal in the women's javelin. Despite breaking the British record with a throw of 65.75m, Goldie Sayers has to settle for fourth place.
