Keeper Roman Larrieu has been named as Plymouth's club captain but he will not be the side's match-day skipper.
The Pilgrims' current player of the year replaces Paul Wotton, who is now with Southampton, but boss Paul Sturrock will appoint another man for the on-field job.
He told the club's website: "Romain has been involved with the club for a long time and is a good ambassador and organiser off the park.
"I am not a great believer in goalies being team captains."
Meanwhile, young keeper Lloyd Saxton, 19, has signed a new one-year contract at Home Park.
