Midfielder Danny Whitaker is hoping Port Vale can use the Christmas fixtures to propel themselves into the League One promotion race.

Vale have moved to within five points of the play-off places following successive wins against Gillingham and Bournemouth and Whitaker believes it stands them in good stead going into the busy festive period.

He told the Sentinel: "These games are massive because the Christmas period can turn the table upside down. We have games left, right and centre, and if we can pick up home wins and get a few points on our travels it will be good.

"We haven't got the biggest squad in the division but the lads are together and will pull through. We'll see how the Christmas period goes.

"We know what we are capable of. We're not a bad side when we put our minds to it.

"I don't know what happened last Saturday, but we had to get over it quickly. We did that with the win we needed in midweek and we have brought up our confidence and took it from there."
