Port Vale have signed defender Clayton Fortune from league rivals Leyton Orient on loan until the transfer window re-opens in January.

The 24-year-old has recently slipped down the pecking order at Brisbane Road, and has rejoined the club on loan where he spent seven months at last season, in the hope of gaining regular first-team action and experience.

Vale boss Martin Foyle told the club website: "We are struggling for defenders and with so many games coming up, I needed to get someone in.

"I searched high and low to bring somebody else in and then Clayton became available and I had no hesitation in taking him."

O's boss Martin Ling to Orient's website: "Since Alton Thelwell came into the building Clayton has dropped to fourth choice centre half.

"It hasn't happened for him so far at this football club, so when the opportunity arose for him to spend some time at a club where he enjoyed a lot of success last season, I thought it would be good for him to go and get some games under his belt there. Hopefully it will get his season kicked on again."
