Portsmouth defender Greg Halford has backed Jamie Ashdown to take advantage of his return to the first team.

The club's financial plight has forced first-choice goalkeeper Stephen Henderson to negotiate a loan move to Championship rivals West Ham.

That meant the former Reading shot-stopper faced Brighton on Saturday - his first start since September.

"Jamie has come in against Brighton and done really, really well," Halford told the club's official website.

"It's always going to be a blow to lose your number one goalkeeper, but we all know what Jamie is capable of.

"Hopefully he can keep a few clean sheets and we can get some wins under our belts."
