Portsmouth defender Sol Campbell is being linked with a surprise move to Newcastle if he leaves Fratton Park this summer.

The 34-year-old former England international is out of contract and with uncertainty still hanging over Pompey as they await a potential buyout, it looks like the ex-Spurs and Arsenal man could move on although nothing has been confirmed one way or the other.

Campbell is understood to be a target for a number of Premier League clubs, including Aston Villa, but the reported interest from the Magpies is a new development.

However, the situation at St James' Park mirrors that at Fratton Park so a switch to Tyneside appears to be an outside bet.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Campbell revealed: "In the next two to three years I want to be in the right situation. The chairman, the manager and people like that, I like them to be really close together to move the club on.

"At the moment with Portsmouth it just seems there are a lot of things in the background. It may resolve itself, I don't know, but for me, as a player, I want to be in the right environment."
