Preston manager Alan Irvine has rejected an approach from West Brom and will remain at Deepdale.

The Baggies targeted Irvine following Tony Mowbray's decision to leave The Hawthorns for Celtic at the start of the summer.

But the ex-Everton assistant has decided to remain at Deepdale - news which has delighted Preston chairman Derek Shaw - who had previously denied receiving an approach from North End's Championship rivals.

Shaw told the club's website: "Over the weekend I was approached by West Bromwich Albion.

"Alan was given permission to speak to West Brom, but has chosen to remain as Preston's manager, which we are extremely pleased about."
