QPR chief scout Ian Broomfield watched ex-Real Madrid midfielder Lassana Diarra in action for Anzhi Makachkala last week.
Broomfield, formerly Redknapp's chief scout at Spurs, made the trip to Tyneside to watch Diarra, 28, play for the Russians in the second leg of their Europa League last 16 tie.
The French international signed a four-year deal at Anzhi last August but is believed to be interested in playing under Redknapp, who signed him from Arsenal for £5.5million in 2008 while in charge of Portsmouth.
Diarra played some of his best football at Fratton Park, winning the FA Cup in his first season, before then moving on to Real Madrid for almost £19million in January 2009.
QPR, however, may not be able to finance another big-money signing from Anzhi if they do not retain their Premier League status so any prospective move hangs on Redknapp's ability to keep Rangers up.
