Madjid Bougherra continues to make good progress in training but will not be risked by Walter Smith against St Johnstone on Wednesday.

The defender is back in Scotland following his appearances for Algeria at the African Cup of Nations and is set to step up training after initially been given some time off to recover.

It was thought the centre-half would be back for the semi showdown Hampden Park but boss Smith has revealed he will not be considered for selection until the weekend.

The Rangers boss said: "Madjid won't play this midweek. It's always asking a bit much of any player who has been away for the length of time he has been to come straight back in.

"He has been over in Angola playing in the tournament there so he'll return here for training later in the week, then be available for the weekend."
