Alex McLeish has confirmed Birmingham are interested in Barry Ferguson but insists there is 'work to be done' on a potential deal.

The former Gers boss is keen to team up with the midfielder once again and speculation is mounting over Ferguson's future at Ibrox following last season's misdemeanours with the Scotland national team.

McLeish refuses to go into details over a possible transfer but admits that the 31-year-old, who still has a year left to run on his Rangers contract, is on his list of targets.

Speaking to the Daily Express, the Blues boss said: "Barry is definitely someone that we have given consideration to, among others.

"I don't want to commit myself right away to the midfield situation because there is still a little bit of work to be done."

McLeish added: "We have others in the pipeline that we have been working hard on. Ferguson has come late in the day in terms of knowing that he is now available, but we are not making our mind up right now."
