Rangers have failed to sign Man City winger Martin Petrov on loan but are poised to swoop for Danish international Simon Poulsen.

Reports suggest Walter Smith contacted City boss Roberto Mancini this week about a potential switch until the end of the season, but the Premier League club were not interested in a deal.

With the Gers keen to bring in a new wideman, 25-year-old Poulsen now looks the most likely new loan addition before the transfer window closes at midnight on Monday.

Poulsen current plays in Holland with AZ Alkmaar, who are coached by ex-Gers boss Dick Advocaat, and the left-winger is expected to hold talks with Rangers officials on Monday.
