Gers step up transfer search

RangersRangers boss Walter Smith has been assured there are still funds available to strengthen his squad as he looks for new midfielders.

Smith has been busy when drafting in new strikers Kenny Miller, Andrius Velicka and Kyle Lafferty this summer but he is light in midfield and is hoping to make some new signings.

Rangers chief executive Martin Bain says every effort is being made to bring new players in and he has also told fans not to worry.

"We are still working hard to make sure we have a squad capable of challenging on all fronts," he revealed. "The nature of Rangers is such that we are constantly linked with players with no foundation.

"But we are used to that and know what our priorities are. I am confident through experience of transfer windows in recent years that there will be movement, both in and out, in the weeks ahead.

"Walter has a core squad to meet the immediate challenges, although we are disappointed to have picked up a couple of injuries at this early stage."
